TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO There was a prologue to World War II - 25 years ago. The people of Shanghai were standing firm against Japanese aggression when they were bombed without warning from the air and from the sea. This was the horrible preview or things to come - civilians helpless before a doom sowed from the skies. Americans were evacuated from the International Zone of Shanghai ~- families of military and diplomatic personnel taken by tenders and tugs through heavy cross-fire to safety aboard U.S. liners. In San Diego, 1,200 Marines set sail for the Far East to protect American lives and property. Again, this was a preview of things to come - in four short years American troops would once more pour overseas by the millions. . ."
